Trusts Application of the Good Estate Management for Schools (GEMS) to enhance estate outcomes and review of the DfE’s Capital Adviser Programme - Andrew Dutton, Arcadis & Lindsay Harris, Department for Education

The Good estate management for schools (GEMS) has been available since 2018 and provides a great source of support to schools and responsible bodies.

With many Trusts growing over a short period of time and others merging, what additional support is required to establish and maintain the performance of estates?

The DfE's Capital Adviser Programme seeks to provide realistic and practical insights and suggestions, linked to GEMS to support Trusts in enhancing estate management practices and processes.

We will provide an overview of the importance of GEMS considerations to Trust estate management and outline how the Capital Adviser Programme is meeting the needs of Trusts.

Since 2017, LocatED and the Department for Education have worked together to establish how the education estate could contribute to the cross-Government aim of increasing the delivery of housing in England, while unlocking the latent value in school land to release capital for reinvestment in the education estate. This talk will explore five key ideas that can help unlock potential in educational assets and create an efficient estate, including the delivery of housing on surplus school land, green initiatives and building up.
