An assessment of the suitability of modular construction for school buildings using recently completed case study projects in London. This will include an analysis of how good a fit a modular grid is with the BB103 schedule of area, whether site constraints and a bespoke design criteria can be efficiently incorporated, how easy adaption will be in the future and what we would do differently next time. We will also discuss the environmental benefits of modular construction, how to get the best thermal performance and a look at embodied energy.

What are the benefits and challenges of adopting an MMC approach for all the elements of the Pre-Construction team, and the client and how should the process be managed to gain maximum benefit? In this session we will look at the trends within the industry, how the new MMC1 framework is delivering new school buildings and what have been the successes and challenges of some sample projects. We will also provide guidance on the influence of the new DfMA Overlay for the RIBA plan of work on the process and some best practice guidelines for stakeholders as to how to engage with MMC and ensure that projects are developed efficiently and productively with MMC in mind.
