Using Modern Methods of Construction to Deliver Sustainable Buildings
Using MMC and Timber to Deliver Lifetime Net Zero - Mark Brown & Chris Leese, TG Escapes Eco Buildings
As the construction industry realigns itself to achieve the governments' net-zero targets, modern methods of construction have been identified as being a key part of the solution. For example, the use of offsite manufacturing helps maintain quality and integrity of the building fabric, provides a controlled carbon cost and reduces time onsite. The use of timber from sustainable sources can reduce density which helps with transport costs and design efficiencies.
We will draw insights from The Non-Domestic Guide to MMC recently published by the MPBA. Using a model developed in partnership with the Carbon Trust we will show how a MMC timber frame system compares to a traditional build in terms of whole life carbon using a case study from Balcarras School, winner of The Sunday Times Southwest State School of the Decade Award. The example will include a timelapse of the 20-week project to provide a 2 storey multi-classroom block.
Delivering sustainable buildings for education through MMC - Joe Shepherd, Associate Director – Education Sector Lead, Reds10
MMC projects can be delivered 50% faster” and “MMC projects use 67% less energy” are figures we hear often. But how does it work in practice? Using examples of recently completed projects, Paul Ruddick from Reds10, will outline how MMC is perfectly suited to drive forward the construction of sustainable educational spaces.
