Innovating Pedagogy for the Future of Estates
Evolving Pedagogies for Learning Estates - Lucy Plumridge, HLM Architects
This presentation will draw on recently completed teaching and learning spaces for The University of Glasgow and will primarily look at achieving innovation around next generation teaching, learning and academic workspace environments, that promote flexibility and are adaptable to change, in line with developing pedagogy and future capacity.
The presentation will explore how universities can transform their educational provision – from the design of spaces, to timetabling, to developing – and implementing new pedagogies? And how can these different aspects to educational provision be aligned, so that they reinforce each other?
Learning-space aligner: A framework for integrated learning spaces - Hiral Patel, Lecturer in Architecture, Cardiff University
The Learning-Space Aligner tool, developed by Dr Patel at Cardiff University, provides a framework to achieve alignment between learning and space. This talk will discuss underpinning research for this framework and give an overview of its development and pilots. The relationship between learning activities and learning spaces is not very well understood within higher education. The challenge to develop a strong evidence-base in this area has been repeatedly heralded over the last fifteen years. Our more recent research has additionally highlighted the need to develop capabilities within estates and academic staff to achieve alignment between learning and space. Moreover, such alignment requires an ongoing business-as-usual process rather than an activity that is often conducted at one moment in time when new building projects are initiated.
