2026 marks 10 years since “The Spark” first opened at Southampton Solent University (SSU).This New Teaching Building, was the start of a major campus redevelopment. The project significantly enhanced the academic profile and reputation of the University and the student and staff experience. It also radically transformed the outward appearance of the campus and reconnected the University to the surrounding area. Important opportunities for business and community engagement were created. In addition, the aspiration was to significantly reduce operational costs and carbon emissions at the University. This presentation covers the detailed POE exercise carried out this year.

The Arts Tower at 60: A Testament to Design Resilience and Retrofit Renewal
Karl Brown, Associate Architect, HLM Architects

Celebrating 60 years of use, the Arts Tower demonstrates how thoughtful retrofit can extend the life of our most valued buildings. Once nicknamed the "Faulty Tower", the Grade II-listed landmark was transformed into a flexible, accessible and future-ready learning environment through close collaboration with HLM and the University of Sheffield, English Heritage and local stakeholders. Achieving a 24% reduction in net energy use while preserving its iconic 1960s character, the Education Estates award-winning refurbishment showcases the long-term value of renewing existing assets rather than replacing them. Delegates will gain practical insights into delivering resilient, sustainable retrofit projects that honour heritage while meeting the demands of the future.
