Rob Gould, Barker, Partner, Helen Taylor, Scott Brownrigg, Architect and Director of Practice & Diane Brazier, Orchard Hill College

The Education Estates Strategy calls for schools to be inclusive by design. This panel session explores what that means in practice. The discussion brings together Diane Brazier (OHCAT), Helen Taylor (Scott Brownrigg) and National Education Nature Park to examine SEND provision, spatial design, adaptability and the growing importance of the external environment.Through case studies and audience Q&A, the session, chaired by Rob Gould (Barker), will provide practical insight into delivering inclusive learning environments across both specialist and mainstream settings.

Bridging the Gap Between Mainstream and Specialist FE
Theo Bishop, Arcadis, Associate, Helen Wood, Trafford & Stockport College Group,
Vice Principal _16-19 Education and Skills

This presentation examines how mainstream further education (FE) colleges are adapting to support increasing numbers of students with SEND and EHCPs, amid rising demand and limited specialist FE places. Case studies of Cheadle College’s purpose-built neuro-inclusive campus and New City College’s innovative SEND Centre refurbishment showcase best practices in inclusive, adaptable design under budget and time constraints. The session highlights the shift in government policy requiring all new FE estates to include dedicated “inclusion bases,” bridging mainstream and specialist support. Emphasis is placed on sensory design, neurodiversity-affirming environments, and the integration of specialist spaces within mainstream settings.
