Old Buildings, New Futures

20 Oct 2026
Improve and Renew the Estate Stage

Unlocking the potential of historic buildings, for future ready academic environments
Petra Marshall, University of Greenwich, Dominique Haslam Architect, Partner, Wilson Mason LLP, Noreen Kassem, Gardiner and Theobald LLP, Partner, Alex Manktelow, Hoare Lea, Associate

We showcase how the University of Greenwich is transforming a floor of King William Court into modern computer laboratories within a Grade I listed, Scheduled Monument and UNESCO‑designated historic setting. By using heritage constraints as a catalyst for design, the project delivers sustainable improvements where upgrades are restricted and enables flexible adaptation for future needs. Close collaboration between Estates, end users and key external heritage stakeholders unlocks contemporary functionality while respecting the site’s significance. A programme of 52 weeks from design commencement to completion on site, will create future‑ready digital learning spaces in one of the University’s most iconic buildings.

Where Learning Leads Renewal Where Learning Leads Renewal
Matt Hayes, LEP, Partner, Architect & Education Lead

Across the UK, vacant department stores sit at the heart of our towns - visible symbols of retail decline. This talk argues they are not liabilities, but dormant infrastructure.Using the transformation of a former M&S in Margate into a Creative and Digital Technology Centre, it demonstrates how education can operate as a primary civic anchor. By aligning curriculum, architecture and industry, learning was placed visibly within the High Street - supporting skills, enterprise and community life. The question is not “Where do we build next?”But “Which town centre anchor can we bring back into use?”
