From Derelict Mill to Education Anchor

18 Mar 2027
Two historic mill complexes in Nelson and Burnley, transformed through joint ventures between Barnfield Construction and local councils, using education as the anchor tenant. At Brierfield Mills, Nelson & Colne College and Lancashire Adult Learning sparked wider regeneration - attracting sports provision, artist studios, apartments, and business units. In Burnley, the UTC (now UCLan's campus) brought thousands of students, new accommodation, and a footbridge to the town centre. The contractor-led JV partnership delivered on time with 37% saving against the DfE benchmark - plus £2m S106 contributions in community education funding.
