Beyond Compliance: 30 years of Evolution in SEND Design and Inclusion in Schools
The presentation will explore the evolution of Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) school design over the past 30 years, from Building Schools for the Future (BSF) to the DfE new Pattern Book and inclusion hubs within mainstream schools. The panel discussion will examine how key themes, including inclusion, accessibility, sensory design, wellbeing, flexibility, stakeholder engagement and standardisation, have developed in response to changing policy, educational practice and funding. Through policy, design guidance, case studies and client perspectives, the session reflects on the balance between bespoke and standardised approaches, highlighting lessons learned, current challenges and future opportunities for creating inclusive learning environments in both specialist and mainstream schools. The panellists with include representatives from the DfE, school and design teams.
