Education Estates 2019

Synopsis

In the context of global warming and greater political awareness of the climate emergency, David Kohn will discuss how education estates project teams can make good designs for the long term benefit of following generations of building owners, users and wider communities. By focusing on the key decisions that project teams need to make in terms of sustainable design and construction, the key learning outcomes will be:

– the impact of re-using buildings and building for the very long term;

– thinking lean, clean and green: for instance how simply achieving good daylight is the right place to start;

– the pros and cons of investing in contemporary technology, such as ground source heat pumps; and

– how to do this beautifully in sensitive, historic settings.

David will illustrate his presentation with two ongoing projects by David Kohn Architects: a new campus for New College Oxford, and the restoration and remodelling of historic buildings for the University of Hasselt, Belgium.
