Education Estates 2019

Synopsis

Sue Corbett and Vince Bartlett discuss how LocatED is working with the DfE to improve the efficiency of the school estate. This will include:

  • Insights, examples and key planning and development considerations from work done to date on LocatED and the DfE’s Surplus Land Pilot. The pilot is exploring a range of ways that schools, trusts and local authorities can work together to unlock surplus land and disused buildings in the school estate for redevelopment. The aim is to generate a capital receipt for reinvestment in school buildings with condition need and, in turn, release land for homes. The pilot will focus on areas of England with high or very high housing need.
  • Improving capability in school trusts to manage estates and plan for the long-term condition of school buildings.
  • Income generation initiatives for schools with underutilised buildings and land.
