Synopsis

Leeds Arts University is a unique project thanks to the layers of ornament and embellishment worked in the design and details. With an emphasis placed on the importance of collaboration, performance and exhibition by the client, numerous custom designed items and artistic commissions were included in the scheme. Delivering these presented organizational difficulties and challenged many designers from disparate fields to work closely together, creating installations that are as much art as construction.

Whilst the installations are often bold, they are in dialogue with the building’s architecture and the finished scheme feels like a considered whole, rather than a patchwork of competing ideas. The integrated art does not overwhelm either the architecture or the space, leaving scope for students and staff to further make their own mark on the building. If the building is a work of art, then it lives up the adage that art is never finished, only abandoned.

The project architect will be speaking with support from other key contributors, about the collaboration process which produced this successful outcome, the challenges faced, and the lessons learned.
