Education Estates 2019

Synopsis

Some of the country’s finest architecture is found within education estates; from medieval universities to innovative 20th century facilities. This heritage makes our colleges and universities distinctive and enjoyable places to study, work and play. However historic estates are often more challenging to expand and adapt to modern educational needs and standards.

This presentation will identify the key heritage risks that can affect the planning, design and management of estates. By taking a proactive approach to managing change in the historic environment, heritage risk can be understood and built into the management and planning of education estates.

We will explore common heritage issues relevant to education estates and the tools available to assist in managing heritage risk and reducing the legislative burden including: listing enhancement, certificates of lawfulness for proposed works, certificates of immunity from listing and Heritage Partnership Agreements.
