Synopsis

The British Institute of Learning Disabilities estimates that 2% of people in the UK have a learning disability/ difficulty, ranging from mild to profound and multiple learning disabilities. The diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorders and other cognitive disabilities is on the increase with ASD reportedly affecting 1 in 100 or even 1 in 60 young people in some countries. For these students the world can feel overwhelming, they can feel socially different and unable to interpret what is going on around them and this can cause considerable anxiety. So how do you design schools, further and higher education spaces that support special educational needs such as Asperger’ Syndrome and Social Anxiety?
The talk will explore how design principles for specialist SEN schools can influence all education buildings, to create environments that can reduce stress and anxiety. It will include an exploration of the sensory qualities of spaces as well as physiological impact of spatial relationships.
