Flexibility and Adaptation by Design
Carew Academy - The Journey
The presentation will outline the extended journey for the Carew Academy, a project which started in 2017 and completed in 2024. In this time, not only have the DfE guidelines changed but also industry standards, leading to design and construction challenges. Both the architect and the client side will outline the key objectives for the design and how these were achieved, noting that flexibility and pupil/staff experience were placed at the centre of the design.
Inclusive by Design: Lessons from Silverwood SEND School
Gladys Marr, Gary Overton and Sean McKeown share the journey of designing Silverwood SEND School, a fully inclusive 9,190m² campus catering to children with diverse and severe needs. This presentation explores the innovative design principles, including sensory spaces, adaptable classrooms, and inclusive outdoor facilities, all created to provide the best possible start in life for every child. Attendees will gain insights into overcoming challenges in planning and delivery, engaging with stakeholders, and creating a SEND centre of excellence that fosters inclusion, independence, and well-being.
