Barry Coupe Architects
Barry Coupe has been an architect since 1977, and started his own practice in 1980, specialising initially in commercial, university and educational projects. Barry sold the practice in 2005, and since then has concentrated on advising clients about aspects of building projects as an RIBA Client Advier.
For many years, Barry specialised and was involved in 15 university projects relating to the design of Faculties of Veterinary Medicine throughout the UK and mainland Europe. Recognised as an expert of such facilities, he not only designed many of these schemes, but also was employed as a Client Adviser on aspects from inception to completion. He also been involved in many school projects both for the maintained and private sectors.
What has been of real benefit for clients, has been an acute awareness and expertise in managing expectations not only in the quality of the design, but also programme and financial viability. Barry’s experience gained over many years, is significant in managing this risk.
Current projects include creating a business plan for a significant £40m development plan for a public school which features Grade 1 listed buildings. The work has included the procurement of the various projects considering the smooth running of the school throughout this 10-year plan, and making sure the business plan is sustainable relative to the funding and cash flow. A design team has now been appointed for the first two schemes; a new library and enlargement of the school assembly hall ready to start this autumn.
