Roland Karthaus

Matter Architecture

Roland Karthaus co-founded Matter with Jonathan McDowell in 2016. He was previously principal of Karthaus Design, a practice working with clients at the earliest stages of large, complex projects.  From 2005-2008 Roland was a public sector commissioning client, overseeing a £50m capital development programme of community infrastructure projects.

As Client Adviser, Roland combines his unique perspectives as former client and practicing architect, to help shape projects for success from the outset. A leading proponent of user-centred design, he has written and researched widely on the subject.  Through this understanding of the full building life-cycle, Roland can advise clients on commissioning, briefing and procurement approaches to deliver buildings that truly serve people’s needs.

Recently Roland has been supporting Clapham Manor Primary school to expand their estate through grant application funding, securing planning consents in sensitive sites and completing new buildings as part of a wider masterplan.

Roland has been a registered Architect since 2002, a Member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a Fellow of the RSA.  Professional appointments include: CABE Built Environment Expert, Harrow, Harlow & Gilston Garden Town Design Review Panels member, RIBA Planning Advisory Group and RIBA Client Adviser.  Roland teaches and researches at at the University of East London where he was previously Part 2 architecture course leader.
