Anna Mavrogianni - UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering

Anna Mavrogianni

Professor of Sustainable, Healthy and Equitable Built Environment, UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering

With a background in architectural engineering and building physics, Anna is an expert in building indoor environmental quality and energy performance analysis, and climate change adaptation of the built environment sector, with a focus on overheating and air pollution at the building and urban scale, and associated impacts on human wellbeing, health and health inequalities. In the last 15 years, she led, co-led or significantly contributed to more than 40 research projects, and co-authored over 170 peer reviewed publications, book chapters, Government and industry reports.

Anna is the Principal Investigator of the £2 million 'Accelerating Resilience and Climate Adaptation of Domestic Environments for vulnerable populations' (ARCADE) project, part of the UKRI-Defra 'Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change' (MACC) programme. She is also a Co-Lead in three £6 million UKRI-NIHR Hubs on realising the health co-benefits of Net Zero: the 'National Hub on Net Zero, Health and Extreme Heat' (HEARTH), the 'Indoor Habitability during the Transition to Net Zero Housing' Hub (INHABIT) and the 'Child and adolescent Health Impacts of Learning Indoor environments under Net Zero' Hub (CHILI). She previously led the EPSRC-funded project ‘Advancing School Performance: Indoor environmental quality, Resilience and Educational outcomes’ (ASPIRE) and a project quantifying climate change impacts on UK housing heating and cooling needs, as part of the DESNZ ‘Climate Services for a Net-Zero World’ (CS-N0W) project. She is a Co-Investigator in the NERC-funded ClimaCare and Therm-UK projects, assessing the climate resilience of UK care and extra care homes, and an NIHR-funded project, aiming to evaluate the potential health impacts of planning deregulation housing in England.

Anna is a member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Knowledge Management Committee and an International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA)-England Board member. She teaches at the MSc Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings and MSc Smart Buildings and Digital Engineering programmes, and supervises MSc, MArch and PhD students at the Bartlett.
