Renae Mantooth

Vice President, Education Research Lead, HKS

Dr. Renae Mantooth is the Research Lead for the Education practice at HKS, where she integrates research efforts to inform evidence-based and inclusive design. With a PhD in Design from NC State University and MS in Educational Psychology from the University of Kentucky, she is a trained environmental and educational psychologist whose work explores how physical environments shape human behaviour, motivation, and well-being in educational settings. Her interdisciplinary work bridges architecture and interior design, psychology, and education, with a focus on aligning design intent with lived experience. She collaborates closely with clients, design teams, and communities to translate data into actionable insights. Renae’s research has been featured in peer reviewed journals and national media, and she has presented at AIA, EDRA, and SXSW EDU. Outside of HKS, Renae is an Assistant Professor of the Practice in the College of Design at North Carolina State University teaching doctoral students and budding design researchers. She is committed to advancing environments that promote dignity, belonging, and opportunity, especially for those minoritised by the built environment.
