When Policy Meets Practice: Delivering Low-Carbon Public Buildings
A Carbon Reduction Journey – Lessons from a Scottish Government Pathfinder
The presentation will explore the design strategies employed to reduce both the operational and embodied carbon at the new Fife College Campus in Dunfermline. A pivotal aspect of this project was the introduction of the new Scottish Government ‘Net Zero Public Building Standards’ midway through the design process. As part of the ‘Pathfinder’ initiative, this project helped create benchmark data to guide future endeavors. The design team will share their journey, highlighting successes and valuable lessons learned.
How to achieve Welsh Government Embodied Carbon Targets: embracing innovation and managing risk
The Welsh Government has set a pathway of decreasing targets for embodied carbon on publicly funded projects. In this session, we will describe what embodied carbon is, how to divide these targets between different elements of a building so they can be effectively measured and managed through the design process, and how they can be met by adapting traditional construction methods to manage risk and embrace innovation. The session will also explore how thoughtful material choices can contribute to carbon reduction and how these strategies can deliver long-term benefits for building occupiers, including improved comfort, wellbeing, and operational efficiency.
