Designing for different needs - a discussion in projects and in practice
Designing for different needs - a discussion in projects and in practice
Designing for different needs - a discussion in projects and in practice Located on neighbouring sites, The Hawthorns School and The Sir Geoff Hurst School are both new build, all-through schools, which initially had the opportunity to be similar in their design approach. Their differences, however, were often stronger than their commonality - with the cohorts, one for autistic children and the other for children with SEMH, driving both large scale and detailed design differences. This discussion, between architect and end users, will focus on the experience of a recent procurement process, along with lessons learnt on the balance between engaging with specific SEND cohorts and the requirement for standardised special school design.
