Reimagining Learning Spaces: From Pattern Language to Evidence-Based Design
Designing Enriched Environments to Support Social and Emotional Learning
Evidence-based research presentation on design spaces for social and emotional learning, providing the evidence to support the design methods designers use every day.
Patterns for Learning
60 years ago, Christopher Alexander proposed a universal set of 253 patterns that were intended to ‘replace ideas and architectural practice entirely’. My talk will critique those patterns from Alexander’s seminal book that are relevant to learning environments... then identify ’patterns’ from education spaces in our own work. My examples will be taken from our current work on New Model Designs for the DFE, from a number of primary and special needs schools, and from vocational colleges and university buildings in the UK and abroad.
