How modular construction plays its part in delivering local SEND places
Christopher Lees, TG Escapes Modular Eco Buildings & Euan, Leslie, Surrey CC Surrey County Council have embraced modular construction as part of their solution to the rising demand for SEND spaces. One element of this is to provide SEND hubs within mainstream schools. MMC has allowed them to rapidly create flexible, purpose-built, net-zero facilities overcoming challenges like restricted site access and demanding acoustic requirements (BB93). Three case studies from TG Escapes will showcase how timber-frame buildings, featuring classrooms, sensory rooms, and specialised spaces for multi-disciplinary teams, support students with visual impairment and autism, helping accommodate the growth of students with EHCP’s, keeping them local, and reducing reliance on expensive out-of-area provision.

Breaking New Ground
Delivering the first SEMH School on Isle of Sheppey Joe Shepherd (Reds10) and Stuart Norris (ALT) will discuss Nore Academy, the first SEMH school on the Isle of Sheppey, serving 120 secondary students. They will share insights into overcoming the challenges of building on a shared site with a primary school and managing a late-stage transition in Trusts. The presentation will also cover the flexible off-site volumetric design solution tailored to meet the unique needs of SEMH students. Additionally, the session will include key findings from the Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE), offering valuable lessons on the school’s performance and how the design has supported its intended outcomes.
