Building Climate-Resilient Schools: Insights from Arup’s Global Education Portfolio
Climate change is increasingly impacting global education, causing school closures, infrastructure damage, and adverse effects on students’ physical and mental health. These disruptions lead to higher absenteeism and reduced concentration, negatively affecting educational outcomes and society. Arup is pioneering a full-stack approach to climate resilience in schools, integrating adaptation, nature-based solutions, and decarbonisation. Drawing on work in the UK and Peru, the presentation highlights co-developed climate plans, SuDS installations, and the Climate Resilient Schools. It explores retrofit strategies for existing estates and resilience-first design for new builds using scalable approaches for national implementation.
