Revitalising Heritage for Modern Learning: Edinburgh Futures Institute
The transformation of the historic Edinburgh Royal Infirmary into the Edinburgh Futures Institute is a major urban restoration. This case study examines the challenges of redeveloping a Grade A listed building, balancing heritage conservation with modern sustainability concerns. Over nine years, the project evolved alongside growing industry discussions around upfront and embodied carbon. The result is a thriving space for public use and education, demonstrating the power of adaptive reuse. Attendees will gain insights into governance challenges, technical problem-solving, and the evolving role of sustainability in historic building redevelopment.

Intervention and Reinvention
Referring to the Brynmor Jones Library, University of Hull and New Century Hall, Manchester, Richmal's presentation will look at the creative reuse of 20th-century buildings from inside and outside the HE sector.  Both designed in the 1960s, respectively a non-designated heritage asset and a grade II listed building, our interventions ensured the reinvention of these built assets, and how these mid-century structures required targeted and bold intervention to ensure they continued to be occupied into the future.
