Department for Education Sustainability Award

The Department for Education Sustainability Award celebrates the collective efforts of schools and colleges in creating a more sustainable future. This award recognises institutions that have taken innovative, measurable, and impactful steps to embed sustainability within their operations, curriculum, and community.
The winning school or college will receive a £2,500 award to further support sustainability initiatives.
Sustainability is not just about energy efficiency or carbon reduction—it is about creating an environmentally responsible culture that considers air quality, travel, biodiversity, and the physical and mental wellbeing of students and staff. Schools and colleges play a vital role in preparing young people for a sustainable future, and this award seeks to highlight those making meaningful progress.
Eligibility
- Only state schools or colleges receiving funding through their local authority or directly from the government are eligible to enter.
- Entries must be for an individual school or college (Multi-Academy Trusts will not be judged as a whole).
Entry Requirements
To enter, schools and colleges must submit:
- 300 words describing the school or college and its approach to sustainability.
- 50 words on why the school or college should win.
- A pack of supporting information presented as either:
- Two A3 posters or
- Five presentation slides
This should highlight initiatives, measures, and policies implemented to enhance sustainability, using both qualitative and quantitative data.
Examples include:
- Energy monitoring/measures implemented to save energy
- Waste management/reduction in paper waste
- Increase in biodiversity
- Sustainable travel initiatives
- Pupil engagement in climate action plans
Judging Criteria
Entries will be assessed on the following:
1. Pupil Engagement (10 Points)
Evidence of how students have been actively involved in driving sustainability initiatives within the school or college.
2. Staff Engagement (10 Points)
Demonstration of how staff members contribute to and support sustainable practices.
3. Community Engagement (10 Points)
Examples of how the school or college has collaborated with the wider community to promote sustainability beyond the campus.
4. Developing a Plan and Accessing Support (10 Points)
Demonstration of how they have developed and are delivering a holistic climate action plan to embed sustainability and how they may have engaged with any element of the DfE sustainability support programme which includes:
5. Innovation (10 Points)
Creative and forward-thinking approaches to sustainability that set the school or college apart.
Supporting Documentation
Entrants are encouraged to provide additional evidence, including:
- Testimonials from students, staff, or community members.
- Metrics demonstrating tangible sustainability achievements.
- Photos, reports, or other supporting materials that showcase the impact of initiatives.
